Skyfall (2012)

Shootout, car chase, fruit stand being destroyed in the first 10 minutes of the film? This could only be a Bond film. And a great one at that. Daniel Craig returns as Bond, James Bond in the newest in the series and does a superb job. Skyfall follows Bond on his journey of what I like to call redemption. It's hard to talk about this without giving away some spoilers, but it revolves around him trying to prove his role in MI6 when everyone starts to doubt him.

For a 2.5 hour movie, it certainly did not feel that long. The time just flew by. It seems as though there was both too much plot and not enough plot at the same time. There was so much to put into this film that it almost seems like the plot was not developed thoroughly enough. Accolades must be given to Javier Bardem who plays the villain. He was creepy, yet at times you almost pity him. But mostly, like in any Bond film, you just want him to die.

Quickly back to Daniel Craig, I have to say that he rocked it. I liked him much better in Skyfall than in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace. The broody, machine, secretive Bond that we all know and love comes through in his portrayal perfectly. And of course how can you not love that accent (and body) of his. But surprisingly my favourite characters of the film had rather minor roles. Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, and Albert Finney all had supporting roles, but critical in nature. Keep an eye out for them when you watch the film. You'll see what I mean.

Oh how I would love to rave about all of the actors and how amazing they were in their roles, but none of that can be done without spoiling the entire movie. So instead I'll talk about the score. Adele's sultry voice was perfect for this film. Opening sequence was one of the best I've ever seen. And of course you have the infamous Bond theme playing throughout in the background. But the cinematography, the directing, the acting, the soundtrack all worked so well together. Have I enticed you yet to go watch this film?

Dare I say that this might be my favourite Bond film ever? This film makes you develop connections with the characters. You, in a sense, grow with them and become attached to them. My only critique is that the antagonist's back story and reasoning for being evil was a bit dry and not as exciting as I hoped. And I am a little bit disappointed that there really wasn't a clear Bond Girl in this one. All in all, I found the film to be very enjoyable. Plus, I'm a sucker for car chases and a bad ass shoot out. Also, Bond drives a beautiful and sexy car.

Rating: 8/10

  1. There’s a lot of the old-school stuff here for Bond that will make die-hard fans go insane, but a lot of other cooler, newer stuff as well that definitely has me more amped up to see where this franchise takes itself. Good review Debbie.
