Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

Disney, you've done it again.

Wreck-It Ralph is a heartwarming tale about being true to who you are and not letting others tell you otherwise. This film was such a smart concept, but I cannot imagine how difficult it was to produce it. When the arcade closes, the games come to life. Who would have thought of game characters as being "real" and "living". Travelling between games through the wires and having characters from one game interacting with a completed unrelated character from another game. Brilliant.

The movie centers around the main character Ralph, who is tired of being the bad guy and never getting the praise and accolade he deserves for the work he does. He goes on a journey to try and get himself a gold medal to prove to his neighbours that he is worthy of the same glory that his colleague, Fix-It Felix Jr, gets. Along the way he meets a  Vanellope von Schweetz  a young girl who aspires to be a racer in the game Sugar Rush, but is shunned by the everyone in the kingdom. Ralph tries to help Vanellope win the race she's always dreamed of winning all while trying to save the game from being destroyed by cybugs. Enter the most bad ass animated character of all time, Sergeant Tamora Jean Calhoun who, alongside Fix-It Felix Jr, helps to save the game.

As good as the plot was, I did find it to be a tad bit lulling and slow. There were a few times when I thought that some scenes were just fillers and a unnecessary, but that's not taking any thing away from the main story line. But the plot is not the reason I enjoyed the movie. The little nuances was what made the film for me.

Imagine all of your favourite video game characters in one movie about a video game. Nerdgasm right here. Never have details captured my attention so much in my life. I'll point out some of the clever things I noticed. 1) As all the bad guys leave from their meeting at Clyde's (orange ghost) "lair", on the actual game machine it looks like the characters are actually from Pac-Man. 2) Animated Skrillex. 3) The old school Nintendo controller used as a keypad to enter a secret vault. 4) The concept of unfinished bonus levels in a game. 5) Game Central Station. Clever. 6) Doughnuts and Beard Papa as the policemen in the Sugar Rush game. Not sure if that one was an intentional poke at the running gag of policemen and doughnuts, but I was amused.

I could go on about the little details, but it's so much more fun when viewers notice it themselves. This film will tug at your heart strings. You develop an attachment to the characters and you start to feel for them. Whether you're 3 or 30, this film will surely make you smile. It's the ultimate amalgamation of all things awesome and cute. How can you possibly say no?
