The Croods (2013)

Ever wonder what life as a caveman would be like? Well you can keep wondering because I'm 100% positive The Croods is not an accurate representation of what went down billions of years ago. Keeping that in mind, it's still an incredibly silly and adorable movie.

I don't think this is a movie worth seeing in 3D, but it's still a perfectly enjoyable film. Deep in the heart of nowhere, the Croods are a family struggling to survive day to day. Eep (Emma Stone) is just like any other girl in the 21st century. She has an overprotective father, Grugg (Nicholas Cage) who forbids her to explore the world outside of their cave for he fears her safety. But when one night she ventures out on her own and meets Guy (Ryan Reynolds), a more evolved being, and he tells her about the possibility of the end of the world, the Croods are forced to leave what they know to be safe and face extreme uncertainty.

The entire premise of this film was so ridiculous to me, but it was just so damn cute that I couldn't help but smile. Let's face the facts - The Croods is not sophisticated, it's not funny, and many of the subplots are simply there for filler and don't add any real substance to the plot. But there's enough action that diverts your attention for a while. The best parts of the film are seeing how the cavemen react to the strange inventions and ideas of Guy.

Of course there's a super sweet underlying message of growing up and loving your family, but other than that there isn't much else to go on. The editing and great voice acting of Stone might be able to make up some lost ground. And there are a couple of running gags that I found amusing, but not enough to make me laugh like the other five year olds in the theatre. I felt a tad bit creepy watching the film since I didn't go with a child.

Despite everything I've said, this film hits the nail on the head for the demographic it was created for. It's not a film for a grown adult to go watch (I'm just a sucker for cartoons). The kids will enjoy this goofy movie without a doubt.

Rating: 7.5/10
